They say that it takes a village to raise a child. Amidst the millennial pandemic, there was no village to help us raise our daughter. Our home was our village & we were the only inhabitants. So, what does it take to raise a child? Well, certainly not a village. Being a parent during an unprecedented time was challenging in many ways but, thankfully, parenting in the modern age has allowed us luxuries that make this journey somewhat easier. Here are five items that I couldn’t and still can’t live without as a mom:
1. Baby carrier
For our family, baby-wearing is not only a fashion statement but also a secure space for our baby to keep calm and connected to us while we have our hands free to chase household chores and work commitments from home. There was no way in the world that we would’ve been as productive as we are as parents without our baby carrier!
2. White noise & night light device
In an attempt to get more sleep than most parents with a newborn do, we decided to invest in a 2 in 1 white noise and night light device. Our portable device allows us to create a peaceful ambience in any environment that allows our baby to sleep relatively well. It helped us immensely with establishing a routine around naptime, bedtime & helped us through times of restlessness from day one.
3. A notebook / daily planner
My husband and I are planners. More than ever, we have made use of writing to-do lists, budget plans, menu plans, grocery lists, and our general family goals since becoming parents. Jotting all of the things we need to be productive, helps us remain focused, communicated & organised amongst the chaos of life.
4. Our Checkers 60 & other online shopping apps
Online shopping has become second nature to our family. The convenience of having fresh groceries & essentials delivered to our doorstep within an hour is heavenly. With less time in the shops, no in-store triggered toddler tantrums, and more time to love my little one, I can’t possibly imagine a life without my shopping apps!
5. Wet & dry hand vacuum
As parents who adopted the concept of baby-led weaning, mealtime is always the messiest time of the day. Our daughter is very passionate about sharing her food with the floors and the walls, wherever we go. Our vacuum is portable and has become essential that tags along wherever we go. It keeps the dirt away in seconds and the memories alive forever.
Disclaimer: The above are items that our family used to help us through our journey as new parents. Under our pandemic circumstances, everything was extremely helpful in helping us raise our daughter. However, without any of the above, I wouldn’t be less of a mom. It may have been more difficult to manage, but not impossible to get through <3
